Most phones feel like gadgets, because they're all metal and plastic. The iPhone 4 feels like jewelry, because of all that glass. The front of the phone is nearly-indestructible Gorilla Glass, according to Apple, and the back is a different kind of tempered glass. That will make the phones relatively resistant to scratches, but I'd still recommend a case if you want to keep yours looking pristine.
The screen's 960-by-640 resolution is really important, but not for the reason you think. If your world consists only of Apple phones, the new resolution is a revelation. Text, especially, looks razor-sharp, and Web pages practically look like they were laser printed right onto your screen. TV shows and movies look much better on the iPhone 4 than on the iPhone 3GS ($99, )—you can see subtle details and richer colors. It's like switching from a standard-def to a high-def TV.
Looks like the iPhone4G is getting the A4 that is in the iPad
Phone Calls and FaceTime Video CallsThe iPhone 4, like the 3GS, is a GSM/HSPA 7.2 phone that operates on AT&T's and foreign 3G bands. Also like previous iPhones, it's not the greatest phone for voice calling.
That said, I got FaceTime to work on the first try, which is a lot more than I can say for Fring and Qik on Android. In the land of the faceless, is the one-faced man king? Or something like that. Mobile video calling in the US is clearly not ready for prime (face) time yet, but a desktop or Android FaceTime client coming in the next year could really change the situation by giving iPhone owners more people to call.—Next: Smartphone and App Experience >
An unnamed Apple representative told the blog that Apple believes it's "no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging". The unidentified Apple employee goes on to say, "This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas."
The long and short of it is that Apple's lawyers think Samsung's recent products borrow rather too much from Apple designs. And we imagine plenty of people would agree: take a look at our review of the Samsung Galaxy Ace, where we say the new handset looks "an awful lot like the iPhone 4".
This incredibly un-iPhone like iPhone clone has features that Apple's official devices lack, such as dual SIM card slots and a removable battery. Shenzhen City is notorious for it's electronics cloning industry and over 400 companies are said to participate in the business.
1:40 p.m. Jobs is introducing something called Retina Display. The new iPhone will have four times as many pixels. 326 pixels per inch. He says there has never been a display like this on a phone. It turns out there is a magic number when it looks like reading print to the human eye at 300 pixels per inch and now they are well past that.
For those interested in jailbreaking their A4 Apple devices (iPhone 4, 3GS, and 4th Gen iPod touch), a new update has been released that makes things a little easier. Unlike the previous Redsn0w iOS 6 jailbreak, the newest version, 0.9.15b1, comes with full support of the Cydia App store.
Perhaps most notably, regardless of iOS version, only the iPhone 4S is capable officially of running "Siri," Apple's acquired "intelligent assistant" software program that endeavors to parse naturally spoken questions and provide voice answers using the web as its source and perform basic software tasks as well (like adding an appointment to a calendar or preparing and sending a text message). In the "real world," Siri doesn't always perform perfectly, but it still can be useful.
Running iOS 7, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S alike do not support AirDrop. However, both devices support all basic functionality -- Control Center, Notification Center, and Multitasking, as well as Safari and iTunes Radio -- in addition to "Filters in Photos" and an assortment of photo functionality that Apple refers to as "Square and video formats and swipe to capture." Just as it does running iOS 6, the iPhone 4S still supports Panorama and Siri, and it supports new "Filters in Camera" functionality in iOS 7, whereas the iPhone 4 does not.
Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone 4 today, which he claims offers over 100 new features, though he would focus on only a handful for the keynote. The iPhone 4 looks like the iPhone prototype obtained under questionable circumstances by Gizmodo: stainless steel casing, all-glass front, and a design Jobs describes as the thinnest smartphone on the planet: almost 25 percent thinner than the iPhone 3GS.. Unlike previous iPhones, the iPhone 4 will have volume controls on the side of the phone along with an accessible microSIM tray. The iPhone 4 features a front-facing camera, and the back sports a microphone, 30pin connector for docking, and a speaker, while the top sports a second microphone for noise cancellation, sleep/wake button, and a headset input.
Apple has confirmed that iOS 6 will be available for the iPhone 4 in the fall. This will bring lots of new features and a new Maps app, Passbook for tickets, and a host of other improvements. A few things, like Siri and FaceTime on your cellular network, will not work on the iPhone 4, however. You can find out more in iOS 6: What you need to know.
Bear in mind that glossy prints are more likely to show up any quality issues. Glossy paper is designed to show crystal-clear, vibrant, high contrast photos. Matte paper is more porous and can be a bit more forgiving.
Companies like Snapfish and Shutterfly are popular print services that offer many different options for printing your photos. They both offer an app for your iPhone, but for complex creations you might find it easier to use their website on your computer rather than your iPhone.
There are a few differences between professional print houses and businesses like Snapfish and Shutterfly. For example, many of their printing machines are different, but the main difference is that they work to ensure the colors in your images are accurate.
Educational apps for preschoolers should require them to do more than just swipe, watch a video, or push a button. They should actively engage your child and connect the content to their existing knowledge. Additionally, an open-ended, responsive, choose-your-own-adventure-style app is more likely to be educational than one that is linear. Before choosing an educational app for your child, do some research and consult resources such as Common Sense Media for guidelines and reviews about age-appropriate apps.
The Apple A4 is technically the first SoC in the A-series. It's also the first SoC that Apple designed in-house. The company used older SoCs like the APL0098, APL0278, APL0298, and APL2298, for its devices ranging from the original iPhones, the 2nd-gen iPod Touch, the iPhone 3GS, and the third-gen iPod Touch, respectively.
Coming back to the Apple A4, it's was designed by Apple and manufactured by Samsung. The A4 commercially debuted in 2010, carrying an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU and a PowerVR SGX 535 graphics processor. This particular chip was first used in Apple's iPad, and later in iPhone 4. The A4 has since been discontinued by Apple, and it was replaced by the new A5 chip that debuted in March 2011. Without getting into too many details, here's a quick look at each Apple A-series SKU that have debuted so far:
Apple expanded the M-series family with the announcement of two new chips - the M1 Pro and the M1 Max in October 2021. Both new processors upgrade upon the power of the M1 to offer a more refined and powerful user experience to "Pro" users inside the 14-inch and the 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks. In case you are interested, you can check out our Apple M1 Pro vs M1 Max deep dive article to learn more about the new chips. And more recently, the company announced the new M1 Ultra, which is said to be the most powerful Apple silicon to date. Unlike the other chips in the M1 family, the M1 Ultra is made for desktop computers. As a result, the new M1 Ultra SoC is going to be exclusive to Apple's new Mac Studio desktop computer. It's an expensive piece of hardware that can cost up to $8,000 for a fully kitted unit. The Apple Mac Studio is now available to purchase and you can check out our Mac Studio deals page to see if you can save some money on your purchase.
In addition to the popularly known A and M-series of chips, Apple also makes a few more chips in-house to be used in devices like the Apple Watch, its wearables, and more. Apple's 'S' series family of chips, for instance, are used in Apple Watch. It's a customized chip that uses an application processor, memory, storage, and a couple of other supports processors for wireless connectivity, and more. The first generation of the Apple Watch was powered by the Apple S1 chip. The company has since launched various iterations of this chip. The Apple Watch Series 7 uses the S7 chip which is a custom 64-bit dual-core processor that works in tandem with the W3 wireless chip.
